Anaar

A deep pomegranate pink shot through with silver, crossed at intervals by fine bands of gold zari. Nothing printed, nothing painted — the whole effect comes out of the yarn and the loom.

About the weave

Ghicha yarn carries dark and pale striations along its length, and dyed a strong pink they come through as silver-white lines running the length of the cloth. The colour never sits flat: it moves between deep rose and pale blush depending on where the light falls and how the saree is draped. Photographs only half catch it.

Across that, groups of four and five fine gold zari lines are woven in at intervals through the pallu, gathering into a wider zari band at the border. The zari is real metallic thread, so it flashes rather than glows — against a pink that is already shifting, it gives the cloth two different kinds of light.

What it's for

Pink and gold is the oldest festive pairing there is, and this is a version of it without any of the heaviness. No embroidery, no border work, no weight. It carries a wedding function, a puja, a reception, and it packs into a suitcase without complaint.

A note on handloom

Each piece is woven individually, so slight irregularities in the slub and small variations in the spacing of the zari stripes are characteristic of the craft rather than defects. The silver striation is the natural character of ghicha yarn and will differ from piece to piece. Colour may vary a little from your screen.
