Jheel

Bright teal through the body, streaked silver where the ghicha runs, scattered with small black capsule butis — and then a solid charcoal-black border and pallu, finished with black tassels. Two colours, nothing else.

About the weave

The butis are what the weavers call a capsule design: small elongated motifs, each thrown in as a few strokes of contrast yarn while the cloth is on the loom. In black against teal they read as punctuation rather than pattern — you notice them one at a time.

The teal itself is doing something the photograph only half captures. Ghicha yarn carries dark natural striations along its length, and dyed teal they come through as silver-grey lines running the length of the cloth, so the colour breaks up and moves rather than sitting flat.

What it's for

Teal with black is the most wearable pairing in this collection. There's no zari, no print, nothing ceremonial about it — it will carry a work day, a lunch, an evening out, and it doesn't announce that you tried.

A note on handloom

Each piece is woven individually, so slight irregularities in the slub and variation in the spacing of the butis are characteristic of the craft rather than defects. Colour may vary a little from your screen.
