Rust Red Hand Painted Madhubani Tussar Ghicha Silk Saree – Bhagalpuri
Doli
Rust red through the body, and a pallu that tells a story — a covered palanquin at its centre, the bride seated inside beneath an arched canopy, musicians and family gathered on either side, reeds and flowering plants growing up between them.
About the painting
This is hand-painted Mithila work in the bharni style, drawn and filled directly onto the silk. The pencil underdrawing is still visible in places; the line thickens where the hand pressed and thins where it lifted; each figure's face is drawn rather than repeated. Nothing here came off a screen.
The subject is the doli — the palanquin that carries a bride from her father's house. Mithila painters have worked this scene for generations, and the whole composition is built around it: the canopy at the centre, the horn player announcing the procession, the women in patterned skirts standing witness, and around them the plants and birds that always fill a Mithila ground.
About the fabric
Tussar Ghicha silk, handwoven in Bhagalpur. Ghicha is the yarn drawn from the outer layers of the cocoon and spun by hand — hence the slubby, uneven texture and the soft matte lustre. The rust red is deep and slightly uneven across the slub, which is what keeps it from looking flat.

A note on hand work
Each piece is woven individually and painted by hand, so no two are alike. Slight irregularities in the slub, in the line, and in the density of colour are the marks of the hand that made it. Colour may vary a little from your screen.
