Sandhya

Midnight navy through the body, lit with small butis on body, and a broad zari border running the full length — then a pallu that breaks into wide bands of orange and gold, like the last of the light going down over a dark field.

About the weave

Dupion silk is woven from double cocoons — two silkworms spinning together — which produces an irregular yarn with slubs running through it. Woven up, it gives a cloth with a crisp hand and a sharp, changeable lustre: it reflects rather than glows, and the slubs catch light in lines across the surface.

The zari does the work here. A broad gold band edges both sides; small zari butis, two triangles meeting at the waist, are thrown across the navy body alongside butis in orange and red; and the pallu is banded in gold zari and orange, finished with a knotted fringe. Against a dark ground, gold reads as warmth rather than glitter.

What it's for

Navy with orange and gold is a harder, more grown-up pairing than most festive sarees offer. It carries an evening function without being bridal, and it holds up under artificial light — which is when the zari does most of its work.

A note on handloom

Each piece is woven individually, so slight irregularities in the slub and variation in the spacing of the butis are characteristic of the craft rather than defects. Colour may vary a little from your screen.
