Swarna

Undyed tussar in honey gold — the colour the yarn comes off the cocoon as — worked through with ivory chevrons that step diagonally across the cloth. No dye, no zari, no print. Just the silk and the loom.

About the weave

These are dobby motifs. A dobby head on the loom lifts small groups of warp threads to build a geometric figure as the cloth is woven, so the chevrons are made of fine ivory yarn locked into the structure rather than printed or embroidered onto the surface. Run a hand across and you feel them; turn the saree over and they are worked from the other side too.

The whole thing is tone on tone. From a distance the saree reads as plain honey gold with a faint texture; close up it resolves into stepped lines marching diagonally, changing direction as the light moves. It is the quietest saree in this collection and probably the most confident.

About the fabric

Pure tussar silk, handwoven in Bhagalpur, left undyed. Tussar has a natural slub and a soft matte lustre rather than a flat shine, and in its natural state carries a warm golden cast that no dyed gold reproduces. It drapes with body and holds a pleat well.

What it's for

A saree for the occasions where you don't want to be the brightest thing in the room — a formal working day, a daytime function, an evening where the jewellery should do the talking. It takes gold, pearl and oxidised silver equally well.

A note on handloom

Each piece is woven individually, so slight irregularities in the slub and small variations in the spacing of the motifs are characteristic of the craft rather than defects. Undyed tussar also varies naturally in tone from one piece to the next. Colour may vary a little from your screen.
