Undyed tussar in its own colour — the warm gold-beige the yarn comes off the cocoon as, with no dye at all. Across it, ivory diamonds and crosses woven straight into the cloth, and a pallu banded with fine ivory stripes that ends in a knotted fringe.

About the weave

The motifs are dobby work. A dobby head on the loom lifts small groups of warp threads to build a geometric figure as the cloth is woven, so the diamonds are made of fine parallel lines of ivory yarn rather than printed or embroidered onto the surface. Run your hand across and you feel the motif; turn the saree over and you see it worked from the other side. It is slow, quiet weaving nothing about it announces itself from across a room, which is rather the point.

About the fabric

Pure tussar silk, handwoven in Bhagalpur, left undyed. Tussar has a natural slub and a soft matte lustre rather than a flat shine, and in its natural state it carries a warm golden cast that no dyed beige quite reproduces. It drapes with body and holds a pleat well.

A note on handloom
