Ganapati

A deep golden-ochre tussar body, and a pallu that is not printed but painted — a Madhubani mandala with Ganesha at its centre, ringed band by band in triangle, rosette and bead borders, and framed by elephants moving through flowering vines.

About the painting

This is hand-painted Mithila work, drawn directly onto the silk with pen and brush. Look closely and the evidence is everywhere: the line thickens and thins where the hand moved, the colour fills stop just short of their outlines in places, and no two elephants in the border are quite alike. A printed pallu repeats. This one does not.

The centre panel is Ganesha, seated against a fanned aura in orange and red — the remover of obstacles, and the figure a Mithila painter traditionally begins with. Around him, concentric rings of geometry give way to an outer field of elephants, lotus and leaf in green, coral, blue and ochre.

About the fabric

Tussar Ghicha silk, handwoven in Bhagalpur. Ghicha is the yarn drawn from the outer layers of the cocoon and spun by hand — hence the slubby, uneven texture and the soft matte lustre. Its natural golden cast is what the painting sits on; nothing has been bleached out to make a white ground.

A note on hand work

Each piece is woven individually and painted by hand, so no two are alike. Slight irregularities in the slub, in the line, and in the density of colour are the marks of the hand that made it. Colour may vary a little from your screen.
