A denim-blue body streaked through with darker fibre, scattered with small capsule butis in rose, and a magenta border and pallu that lift the whole thing out of the ordinary. Tassels at the fringe in blue and pink.

About the weave

The butis are what the weavers call a capsule design: small elongated motifs, each thrown in as a few strokes of contrast yarn while the cloth is on the loom. They sit widely spaced and slightly uneven, so they read as scattered rather than as a pattern.

What gives this piece its depth is the ghicha itself. The yarn carries dark natural striations along its length, and against a blue dye they read as silver-grey shot through the cloth — the saree looks different standing still than it does in movement.

About the fabric

Tussar Ghicha silk, handwoven in Bhagalpur. Ghicha is the yarn drawn from the outer layers of the cocoon and spun by hand — hence the slubby, uneven texture and the soft matte lustre rather than a flat shine. It has more body than plain tussar and holds a pleat well.
